Fire safety policy
Introduction: Oxford Medwell Academy is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for its staff, students and visitors. Fire safety is a fundamental part of this commitment. It is the policy of Oxford Medwell Academy to ensure that all reasonable precautions are taken to prevent fires and to protect individuals and property from the effects of fire.
Duty Holder: The Duty Holder for Oxford Medwell Academy is the Principal. The Principal has overall responsibility for fire safety and will ensure that all necessary fire safety measures are in place and that fire risk assessments are carried out.
Fire Risk Assessment: It is a legal requirement under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 that Oxford Medwell Academy carry out a Fire Risk Assessment. The principal will appoint a competent person to carry out the assessment, which will be reviewed annually or as circumstances change. The assessment will identify fire hazards, evaluate the risks, and identify the necessary fire safety measures required to protect individuals and property.
Fire Safety Measures: Oxford Medwell Academy will ensure that all necessary fire safety measures are in place, which include but are not limited to:
- Fire detection and alarm systems that are regularly tested and maintained;
- Emergency lighting that is regularly tested and maintained;
- Fire doors that are properly maintained and kept closed when necessary;
- Suitable fire extinguishers that are regularly tested and maintained;
- Regular fire drills and training for staff and students;
- Safe storage and handling of flammable materials;
- Regular maintenance of electrical equipment;
- Provision of clear escape routes that are well signed and free from obstructions;
- Regular inspection and maintenance of heating and ventilation systems.
Responsibilities: All staff, students and visitors to Oxford Medwell Academy have a responsibility to ensure that they comply with the fire safety policy and any related procedures. Staff are responsible for reporting any fire hazards or concerns to the Principal.
